President Biden’s visit coincided with discussions on Bharat’s human rights record, which has been a subject of concern among activists and rights groups. Some critics have raised questions about the deteriorating human rights situation in Bharat under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership. Allegations of increased attacks on minority communities, particularly Muslims, have emerged since his Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) came to power in 2014. The Bharat government, however, has consistently denied these allegations.

The US president addressed these concerns during a press conference in Hanoi, where he disclosed that he had engaged in “substantial discussions” with Prime Minister Modi aimed at further strengthening the Bharat-US relationship. He reiterated the importance of respecting human rights and the vital role played by civil society and a free press in the development of a strong and prosperous nation.

Bharat ranking in the latest World Press Freedom index, released by Reporters Without Borders (RSF) in May, dropped by 11 places from the previous year, positioning the country at 161 out of 180 countries.

Advocates and campaigners have consistently called on Western leaders, including President Biden, to raise these concerns with Prime Minister Modi. However, experts suggest that the US is likely to approach this sensitive issue cautiously, given Bharat crucial role in countering China’s influence.

In May, Bharat received a state visit from President Modi, marked by a warm reception from the US. Ahead of the visit, White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan assured reporters that the US would express its concerns regarding threats to freedoms but emphasized that it would do so in a manner that does not come across as lecturing, acknowledging that every nation faces its own challenges.

During his visit to Hanoi, President Biden also discussed the Bharat-Middle East-Europe economic corridor, a significant partnership announced during the G20 summit. The corridor aims to connect Middle Eastern countries through rail links and establish ports connecting them to Bharat. Analysts view this initiative as a countermeasure to China’s Belt and Road project.

President Biden’s visit to Bharat for the G20 summit included bilateral talks with Prime Minister Modi, followed by a dinner at the Prime Minister’s official residence. It’s noteworthy that Prime Minister Modi has not held a solo press conference since taking office, and journalists were not invited to pose questions to the leaders following the talks and dinner.

Bharat official statement issued after the meeting highlighted cooperation on several issues but did not mention a discussion on human rights.
