In June 1984, Indira Gandhi, the Prime Minister of India at the time, ordered the launch of Operation Blue Star. The objective of the operation was to remove Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, a separatist religious leader and his armed followers from the Harmandir Sahib Complex, also known as the Golden Temple, in Amritsar, Punjab. Bhindranwale had taken up residence in the Golden Temple, which is a sacred site for Sikhs, and was using it as a base to launch attacks against the Indian government.
